How A·spaces Evolved

My name is Deb Schiel. The new millennium dealt me a diagnosis of a rare cancer. Synovial Cell Sarcoma. In order to stop the tumor from spreading to my lungs, I needed to have my leg amputated above the knee.

From March 2000 on, my life has progressed as that of any other amputee. Most people don’t understand the emotional strain of living, day to day, in this manner. I longed for my life to be back to normal. In an effort to return normalcy to my existence, I needed to rid myself of the constant reminders of my circumstances. I wanted to celebrate life. In order to accomplish this, I needed a place to store my constant reminders—my crutches, devices, liners, etc.—which were always on display in clear view. It’s natural for a person to surround themselves with furniture, not legs, arms, walking aids, and assorted medical supplies.

And that is how A·spaces was born. This attractive storage unit was developed to allow a person to live in comfortable, serene surroundings that are more like a home and less like a hospital room. This cabinet allows me the convenience of bedside storage, thus affording me a measure of safety from not having to navigate on crutches in the middle of the night. But A·spaces offers the amputee what a conventional nightstand does not: abundant space to store prosthetics and supplies. Aside from keeping me safe, the cabinet protects the device and keeps it safe and secure. (I’ve knocked my c-leg over many times and needed to schedules many realigning appointments—at $100.00 per event—with my Prosthesis.)

 Our Custom Cabinet:
*is available in 6 styles and in a wide variety of finishes to compliment any décor.
*has carefully thought-out details for organizing supplies.
*offers the privacy we all long for.
*is a “first-step” toward normalcy and feeling good about ourselves.
*is a finely crafted piece of furniture. It’s warm and inviting, not cold, hard, and
   sterile.
*would make a truly thoughtful gift for a loved one.
*is also a wonderful way to celebrate all you love about you!

A portion of profits will be set aside to establish a Foundation.  My goal is to enable college bound young adults of an amputee to further their education by providing a resource.  Prosthetics is extremely expensive and hopefully A·spaces will provide a means for students when medical cost prohibit their future.

A·spaces is here to provide the normalcy and dignity we all deserve!
